Quercetin – The Number 1 Anti-Inflammatory Nutrient for sore muscles, gut issues and much more

By Karen Morris

What is Quercetin?

Quercetin is a natural anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy nutrient, found in green tea, raspberries and honey, but it is richest in onion – particularly red onions. An onion would give you 20mg of quercetin, but some supplements provide up to 500mg, what a brilliant anti-inflammatory! Absolutely fantastic for bones and joint health, quercetin is designed to radically reduce inflammation in the body. Combined with Curcurmin which is found in our Organic Turmeric you can create incredible meals, smoothies, snacks and shakes that not only taste amazing but provide incredible nutrients, vitamins and minerals to the body and reduce inflammation. Where does it come from? Quercetin is a plant flavonol from the flavonoid group, here at Herbs Online Shop, our quercetin is derived from the flower bud of the Japanese pagoda tree (Sophora japonica).

Symptoms of inflammation in the body include headaches, itchy skin and rashes, asthma, sore joints, brain fog, redness of the skin, a joint that feels warm to touch and gut issues such as bloating. If left untreated, inflammation in the body can turn to disease. Quercetin has also been found to prevent heart disease and help control blood sugar levels. It is considered to be one of the most abundant antioxidants in the human diet and plays an important role in fighting free radical damage which can cause ageing and inflammation.

Quercetin can also help protect the brain from oxidative stress, one study has shown high doses of quercetin administered in rats after a stroke reduced oxidative stress. It protects the brain against stress by activating the brain’s natural immune system, and has been shown to significantly prevent lead-induced toxicity in the body. Due to its antioxidant effect, quercetin can inhibit inflammatory processes mediated by leukotrienes. What exactly does this mean? Well, leukotrienes are molecules in the body that trigger the inflammatory response and oxidative stress. Oxidative stress takes place in all of us but is increased by things like a poor diet, high levels of stress, a lack of sleep and exposure to chemical toxins. Quercetin works to reduce the effects of these conditions, which is a powerful resource to help combat some unpreventable stresses, however, as always we say first and foremost to address lifestyle – stress levels, amounts of sleep, diet – in addition to supplementations. As mentioned earlier, Quercetin is also fantastic as an anti-allergy, which means it reduces allergic reactions. This is thanks to its ability to prevent immune cells from releasing histamines, which are chemicals that cause allergic reactions. Anyone wanting to reduce systemic inflammation should absolutely be including quercetin in their supplements and seeking out those key foods that contain high amounts especially red onions.
