NEW 30 DAY CHALLENGE – Christmas Fitness Challenge

We are well and truly into Christmas season now and so it is the perfect time to begin another 30 Day Challenge.

This challenge is our ‘Christmas Fitness Challenge!’ For every day of December our challenge is to do 45 minutes of exercise – yes, EVERY DAY. Over the silly season I have a lot of patients who worry about putting on weight and falling off track with their health and fitness goals, so this challenge is perfect if you are concerned about your diet over Christmas. It is also a perfect opportunity to improve your fitness levels and try new exercises that you normally wouldn’t try. To get us started, check out the below list of ideas you can use to kick-start your new fitness routine. I suggest beginning each session of exercise with one (or more!) of the below, followed by a 40-minute walk, swim or run.

  • 50 star jumps
  • 30 pushups
  • 50 squat jumps
  • 30 sit-ups
  • 2 minute plank hold
  • 5 minutes skipping
  • 2 minute wall-sit
  • 30 burpees
  • 5 minutes high-knees on the spot
  • Walking lunges 3 sets of 24

Exercise is a proven way to de-stress, especially high intensity cardio. When we do high intensity cardio (HIIT – high intensity, interval training) we actually burn up cortisol in the body, meaning we literally use our stress as fuel. Exercise will also help us sleep better, flood our body with endorphins (the happy chemical in our brains) and will of course burn off some of the Christmas cake. This challenge is designed to get us moving every single day and as you can tell from the above exercises, it doesn’t mean you have to push your body to the extreme every day. By increasing your daily calorie expenditure, you can make room for a few extra calories here and there. The easiest way to stay on-track over December and the new year is to exercise, limit alcohol, be disciplined with getting enough sleep and by keeping hydrated with water throughout the day (especially on those 40 degree days we have coming up!)
