The subconscious mind is home to over 90% of your unconscious thoughts and beliefs. It is in the subconscious where our automatic behaviours are stored, the very behaviours that cause us to react to certain people, events and situations in the same way. 

When we think of our automatic behaviour, we often think about things like driving the car or going through certain processes at work that we’ve done a hundred times. We think of actions that we do without needing to think about it! 

Did you know that when we wake up in the morning and start to “remember” who we are, it is our subconscious that is doing the ‘talking’. If you wake up in the morning and automatically think about the problems from the day before, the person who has upset you, or the event that is causing you anxiety, it is because of your subconscious that you are responding to that event in the way that you are.

The subconscious is programmed via conditioning that we give it based on experiences in our life that caused us to feel a heightened emotion, and a belief we made up about that experience whilst in the presence of that emotion. For example, if as a child you were told that you were not good at math and you responded by becoming very upset or angry, if you agreed with the person who said that to you, you’ve now just programmed into your subconscious that you’re not good at math and most likely this belief will carry with you throughout your life until (or if) you actually change it. 

It sounds scary, but your entire personality is simply just a set of programmed beliefs based on past experience and conclusions you drew about yourself and life during these experiences. This is why we can try so hard to change things in our life about ourselves, but if we do not change the subconscious not too much is really going to change. 

This is why some people seem to struggle with weight their whole life, some people struggle with money their whole life, others believe they are destined to be sick, etc. based off the belief that because their family got sick they will too. Some people believe that they are incapable of being in a loving relationship long-term and some people believe they are never good enough in the area of life they wish to excel. 

When you speak to someone with a particular belief like one of the above I just mentioned, and you challenge this belief, they will respond with countless examples from their past to prove why they are right. But, the thing is, it takes one heightened emotion with one belief associated to that emotion to program the subconscious, it only needs to happen once (like the math example). Once a belief has been programmed of course there will be plentiful more experiences to follow that confirm the belief is true. That is what our minds do, they work to confirm stories we make up about our beliefs. The subconscious mind does not care if you are rich or broke, healthy or unhealthy, happy or sad, it only works to have you behave and feel in a way that is in alignment to the beliefs that you have programmed. 

The danger is when the subconscious mind becomes stronger than the conscious mind.  This imbalance causes us to doubt our goals and abilities.  Eg. Weight loss, quiting smoking, exam success, being calm.  It is clear to see that if we are to change our life, we must first change our subconscious. 

Hypnotherapy is a powerful way to access the subconscious mind and tell it to calm down and to rebalance the subconscious and conscious mind so that they are equal.
