Detoxing is a very powerful way to heal and restore the body, however, it is also something that should be planned in advance and taken seriously. Fasting, juice cleanses and detoxing diets can be found in every magazine and all over social media, but did you know that there are key components to a detox that will determine if you’re helping or actually hindering your body.

For example, if you do a three day fast without proper hydration you could cause your body a lot of stress.  During a detox it is vital to stay hydrated as this supplies your body the fluids to flush out the toxins which have caused the need for a detox in the first place.

At we have introduced something very exciting.  I have already received some wonderful feedback. 

Our 3 day Doable Detox Cleanse comes with everything you need to truly flush, heal, restore and rejuvenate the body. The key with our detox is in the name – it is doable. You don’t need to set aside a week off work, go hungry for three days or sit and meditate for 12 hours a day! It is designed to give you all the benefits of a world-class detox while you go about your daily life. 

Preparation for the detox is simple. 

For three to five days before the cleanse, I suggest a slow elimination of certain foods which can irritate the digestive system and cause your body to work harder than it needs to, we want to eliminate these things so as to help the body prepare for all efforts to be put on healing and restoration. 

I suggest removing coffee, sugar, all animal products, wheat, alcohol and cigarettes or any kind of nicotine. As you do this, I also highly suggest incorporating more fresh vegetables, particularly leafy greens into your diet and fruits like berries and apples. Also increase fluids to prepare your body for flushing toxins.

The Cleanse

During the cleanse, I recommend drinking green juices, note that this juice should be vegetable juice – we want kale, cucumber, celery, green apples are ok, avocado is good too and works well if you add ice and make it into more of a smoothie. These juices and smoothies flood your system with vitamins and minerals and also allow your body to focus on healing because there is far less effort required to digest these than proper meals.

After the Cleanse

What to expect:

During a cleanse, it can be a little tricky managing cravings while also managing the emotions that may arise. In Chinese Medicine, it is said that a detox can cause stored emotions to arise, this is because emotions are energy, and energy is stored in the body in different organs. 

As you cleanse your body, the emotions will also be cleansed so keep in mind, while toxins are leaving the body it may cause some discomfort and thoughts/feelings to arise which are important to acknowledge and work through.

During this time there are some other things you can do to help you

  • Stick to light physical activities, walking can help boost your mood and also helps to circulate blood around the body.

  • Acknowledge your emotions. Stress is something we really want to avoid, allow yourself the freedom to do what you love, relax, what your favourite movie, journal, create, visit your favourite place, whatever you love. Think about the future and the life you want to create. Take naps if you can and rest as much as possible. 

So what do you eat??

A detox is designed to assist your body with flushing toxins while also supplying the body with nutrients, therefore, the detox will consist of raw, organic juices and smoothies. 

Organic produce is favourable but you can wash your veggies in apple cider vinegar too. You can also have a salad using vinegar as a dressing. Try incorporating fruits and vegetables like kiwis, beetroot, pineapple, green apples, celery, cucumber, kale, carrot, berries, cabbage, spinach and other dark leafy greens, mangoes and ginger. 

Please keep your final juice/smoothie a minimum of three hours before bedtime to allow your body the time to digest so that while you sleep, it can heal and focus all energy on restoration. 

For the cleanse, we want to be supplying the body with enough hydration and nutrients to help it detox. Therefore having frequent juices is best. You can even time these out as below

Upon waking: Lemon in warm water or apple cider vinegar in warm water

7-8am Meal one: Green vegetable smoothie

10-11am Meal two: Vegetable juice

12pm – Salad if desired

1-2pm Meal Three: Green vegetable smoothie

4pm Meal Four: Vegetable juice

6pm Meal Five: Vegetable juice 

“Reverse Diet”

After your three days of detoxing, begin to introduce steamed vegetables and fruit. Keep your portion sizes small and “reverse detox” meaning do similar to what you did to prepare by being super careful with what you allow back into your diet, avoid sugar, coffee, what, gluten foods, processed foods or dairy products. 

Incorporate more plant based meals over the next few days then by around four or five days return to eating normal meals. Make note of any reactions you have to some foods, this is a good time to test for intolerances. 

Below is an example of a green juice for your cleanse.

  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 cups dark leafy greens/spinach
  • 3 celery stalks
  • 1 cup of kale 
  • Half a lemon or lime
  • Handful of coriander
  • 1 green apple
  • 1 cube ginger

Juice all ingredients in a juicer or blend in a mixer with ice. 

For a smoothie, incorporate any of the above ingredients but add some avocado and fruit like kiwi to make it thicker. Add plenty of ice too, you can even freeze some green juice into ice cubes and include in a smoothie to make it thick and delicious!
