Detoxing – is now the time to start a detox?

Karen Morris

This week, let’s talk about detoxing! A very popular topic for my customers, especially as we begin a new month is the hows and whys of detoxing.

Detoxing is the process of allowing your body to have a break from certain things like sugar, caffeine, alcohol or anything that causes inflammation in the system. Everything in moderation is fine, but sometimes even the things we have in moderation like caffeine will really benefit the body if we take a complete break from them sometimes. Caffeine, like sugar, stimulates the nervous system and causes blood sugar levels to spike and then fall. The crash from sugar can be particularly tricky to move through, and all stimulates can cause anxiety in the body within 24 – 48 hours of being consumed.

In addition to removing certain things from your diet, there are other ways to boost a detox like increasing exercise, drinking more water, increasing hours of sleep, cutting screen-time and incorporating supplements like our Detox Herbals and Liver Tonic (perfect for detoxing!).

According to this article from Vogue.com, detoxing will help boost your immune system for winter.

“70 to 80 per cent of your immune system is contained within the gut. So by alleviating the burden of excess toxins on your liver and ensuring your gut flora colonies are in balance, you’ll boost your defenses against infections like the common cold and dreaded winter flu and avoid the need for antibiotics which cause monumental damage to the colonies of friendly bacteria within your gut and weakening your immune system long term.”

In addition to this, you will actually absorb nutrients better too

“You may be eating a really healthy diet, but if your digestive function is sub-optimal then your ability to absorb the nutrients from your food will be too. Undertaking a comprehensive gut repair and detox program will ensure you get more bang for your bucks spent on superfoods.”

If you are wanting to discuss how to undertake a comprehensive gut repair and detox program in a safe way, please book in a consultation with me here

Some of my favourite superfoods to include in a detox are:

Dark, leafy green vegetables and leaves – broccoli, kale, spinach

Cucumber

Coconut water

Bright vegetables – carrot, pumpkin, tomatoes

Filtered water

Fresh fruit like berries, apples and grapes

My first things to eliminate in a detox are:

Sugar

Caffeine

Alcohol

Processed foods

Meats

Dairy

Detox Herbals or Live Tonic Drops ? Detox Herbal extract drops are full of antioxidants and natural botanicals which help your body to naturally detoxify. Much of our food is treated with artificial chemical fertilisers and pesticides (which is where organic produce comes to the rescue) and we are surrounded by environmental toxins – not to mention the toxins we take in through bad habits. Additionally, our high-stress lives can be ‘toxic’ to our bodies by creating overly acidic blood which many naturopaths believe is the forerunner to disease. Detox herbals are made for anyone seeking a cleanse, to detoxify and to restore their energy levels. Our Detox  herbal extract drops are made up of St Marys Thistle, Dandelion Root, Burdock, Pau D Arco, Globe Artichoke, Celery and Alfalfa and are designed to improve health inside and out.

Liver Tonic (perfect for detoxing!) is a blend of herbs that specifically help the liver to detox and boosts the organ’s ability to filter toxins from the blood. Liver tonic is perfect for anyone who is trying to lower cholesterol, balance hormones, who is detoxing from environmental, diet or alcohol. Liver Tonic is a combination of herbal extracts of St Marys Thistle, Dandelion root, Globe Artichoke and Burdock.
